2006 Tadoussac Playwrights' Residence Reading

National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage

24 EXPOSURES (a reading):

24 Exposures (24 poses)
by Serge Boucher
translated into English by Shelley Tepperman
Presented by Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal (PWM)
In collaboration with the National Arts Centre
Presented in English.

On a beautiful August Saturday, in the back yard of a bungalow, a family gathers to celebrate the oldest son’s 40th birthday. The day and evening of storytelling, joking and bickering reveals 8 lives in a family who love all wrong but love each other just the same. Shelley Tepperman reinvents Serge Boucher’s hyper-realist hit, transposing it from a pure laine family in small-town Quebec to a working class Jewish family in the Niagara region. The reading will be followed by a discussion about the challenges of translating and adapting works for the stage.

Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal is one of Canada’s leading new play development centres. Our objective is to provide a critical and vibrant environment for the playwright of both official languages, to further his or her craft and prepare new scripts for production. Scripts developed at PWM have gone on to several hundred productions at venues as varied as Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland, the Festival de Théâtre des Amériques, Centaur Theatre, the Vancouver Playhouse, and the Stratford Festival.

This translation was developed at PWM’s 2006 Tadoussac Playwrights’ Residence, which provides a place where the nuts and bolts of playwriting and translation/adaptation is examined, a place where writers from different cultures and languages can come together, a place to nurture and celebrate the creation of new Canadian Theatre.

Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal ~ 2006 Tadoussac Playwrights' Residence Reading

Established in 2002 by Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal, the Tadoussac Playwrights’ Residence is an annual retreat where emerging and established playwrights and translators gather to share their creative expertise and develop new works. Playwrights’ Workshop will present a staged reading of a play workshopped at the 2006 Residence: 24 Poses, written by Serge Boucher and translated by Shelley Tepperman. The reading will be followed by a discussion about the challenges of translating and adapting works for the stage.

Presented in English.
