Music
Dan Mangan / Danny Michel
First Baptist Church Ottawa
East meets West as BC Scene joins forces with CBC Radio 2 to present an intimate concert featuring two of the country’s finest songwriters/guitarists. Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Dan Mangan is a star on the rise. Noted for his powerful, weather-beaten vocals that hint at something epic lurking in the undertones, Dan is influenced by both songsmiths of old (Nick Drake, Woody Guthrie) and contemporary innovators (Neutral Milk Hotel, Sigur Rós). Think Kurt Vonnegut with a gravelly sweet singing voice.
Danny Michel is a talented guitarist universally lauded for his incredible songwriting. The Toronto-area resident has released eight albums, toured three times with Stuart McLean’s The Vinyl Cafe, and drawn comparisons to Elvis Costello. EYE Magazine writes “Danny Michel has reached a point where his musical vocabulary is so broad, his songwriting/arranging chops so sharp, his guitar playing so distinctive and his taste for the right sonic touch so impeccable that he can do whatever he wants and make it compelling.”
This concert is being recorded for Canada Live on CBC Radio 2 (103.3 FM in Ottawa) cbc.ca/ottawa
