“God, how they’ll love me when I’m dead.” So lamented Orson Welles, master juggler of form and convention, elusive genius, charlatan, Europeanized American and stateless wanderer. Years after his death, his inescapable shadow still hovers over the work of those who seek to analyze him. To grasp and communicate the essence of Welles the man and, more important, Welles the legend, actor/director Patrice Dubois and lighting designer Martin Labrecque had to become “Wellesian” themselves: versatile, multifaceted, politicized craftsmen. Winner of the 2005 Masque for Outstanding Montreal Production, Everybody’s Welles is a theatrical docudrama about an obsessive lecturer whose life and career are altered by his experience of Welles’s films. A journey to the heart of an America where myths are created and destroyed in the blink of an eye.
