Elemental Simplicity

Artists : Suzanne Bergeron et Claude Picher
Curator : Catherine Sinclair

Elemental Simplicity examines Quebec City’s art scene in the 1950s and 1960s through a presentation of landscape paintings by Suzanne Bergeron and Claude Picher. Positioned somewhere between the abstraction of the Automatistes in Montreal and the regionalism of early-20th-century Quebec painters, their works – described by a critic of the period as “Elemental Simplicity” – used nature as a platform uponwhich to build an investigation of design, colour and artistic materials.
