Paulo Ramos

Library and Archives Canada

Guitarist, singer, and songwriter, this charismatic, Brazil-born Montrealer
conveys all the intoxicating sensuality of his native country. Rather than attempting to reinvent Brazilian popular music, he aspires to master its authenticity. His gentle, dreamy rhythms and warm voice conjure up leisurely afternoons on Brazilian beaches. Accompanied by an ensemble of musicians who clearly love working together, Paulo Ramos charms and captivates.

Paulo Ramos

Versatile Brazilian singer/songwriter/guitarist Paulo Ramos was born into a musical family in Sao Paulo. He took up percussion at the age of nine, and by the time he was twelve he was playing guitar with his brother Toninho, who was already considered a virtuoso. The acoustic guitar soon became his instrument of choice. Paulo performed with various ensembles as a singer, guitarist and percussionist, and recorded with many groups in Brazil and Europe.

He moved to Montreal in 1986 and formed the Paulo Ramos Group with Dan Gigon on bass and Yves Gigon on drums. The group has toured across North America, Europe, Brazil and Asia, enchanting audiences at every stop.

Paulo Ramos’s 1997 album Africa do Brasil won a Juno for Best Global Album. He released his sixth recording, Fragil Felicidade, in 2006.
